POLICE PROMOTION DEPARTMENT

The Department is structured into Two [2] Division, namely;

  1. Promotion
  2. Appeals and Petitions

FUNCTIONS:

  • Formulation of policies and guidelines on promotion in the NPF;
  • Dealing with matters relating to promotion of Senior Police Officers as well as processing of acting appointments;
  • Dealing with matters relating to upgrading/advancement and conversion of Rank and File and Inspectors who have acquired additional relevant qualifications to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police [ASP];
  • Participating in the conduct of promotion examinations and interviews for Police Officers in the examinable cadres in the NPF in conjunction with Police authorities;
  • Processing of breifs and memoranda on the recommendations received from the Inspector General of Police on promotion of Senior Police Officers as well as acting appointment;
  • Examining and processing of appeals/petitions/complaints received from aggrieved Police Officers who are seeking redress for long overdue promotion, unjustified demotions, improper placement in the seniority Staff List/Nominal Roll of the NPF;
  • Keeping custody and maintaining promotion examinations records of all cadres of the NPF including Rank and File, and within the Inspectorate Cadre delegated to the IGP;
  • Processing the gazette of the promotion of Senior Police Officers;
  • Processing of comments, responses and recommendations of IGP for promotion, conversion, upgrading and advancement for the Standing Committee on Police Promotion Matters’ consideration;
  • Liaising with the IGP in respect of the promotions of Rank and File and the Inspectorate Cadre by the power delegated to the IGP;
  • Processing, reviewing and analyzing the recommendations for promotions from the IGP and makes further recommendations to the Standing Committee on Police Promotion Matters based on the guidelines;
  • Identifying training needs of Officers and Men of the NPF and developing the syllabi for courses and promotion examination in collaboration with the NPF Headquarters;
  • Implementing the Commission’s policies on promotion in the NPF;
  • Serving as Secretariat to the Standing Committee on Police Promotion Matters;
  • Preparing Quarterly and Annual Reports of the Departments;
  • Keeping records of Officers who have attended Police Promotion Courses and Examinations; and,
  • Performing any other duties as may be assigned to the Department.
